Directed by Bianca Ciungan, assistant professor of theatre at Hope, “Passage” is loosely based on E.M. Forster’s novel “A Passage to India”. Amidst the social oppression from Country Y in Country X, a friendship blooms between a local doctor and an expatriate teacher. Together, they navigate the complexities of human connection while also navigating the landscape of both countries. Is it possible to look past race, gender, ethnicity, and country of origin when forming friendships? Or can people of different backgrounds never truly be equal? “Passage” audiences explore these questions in a world of dynamic power struggles and social structures.
In addition to Ciungan, the college’s production team consists of Milo Bue as guest scenic designer; Michelle Bombe, professor of theatre and department chair, as costume designer; Eric Van Tassell, assistant professor of lighting and sound design, as lighting designer; Erik Alberg, director of design and production for the performing arts, as sound designer; Meaghan Gietzen as guest props coordinator; Stephen Krebs, technical director for theatre and Hope Repertory Theatre, as technical director; and Anna Hill, theatre department costume manager and dance department costume designer, as costume shop manager.
Also serving on the production team are freshman Elea Oaks of Fort Collins, Colorado, and sophomore Gabrielle Parker of Novi, as assistant stage managers; and sophomore Jacqueline Schatz of Davisburg as stage manager.
The cast includes freshman Trey Hunter of Detroit; sophomores Jesalyn Ashby of Jenison, Bridget Kenny of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Rachel Kuiper of Frankfort, Kolton Muldowney of Buffalo, New York, and Isabelle Seiler of Grand Rapids; and juniors Ellie Cocking of Orlando, Florida, and Anya Kapitula of Grand Rapids.
